The sound was better with a cassette adapter, but if in my cassette player, died on board, I went to an FM transmitter (iTrip, more precisely). It is almost as good, lost (but the entrance into one or two intersections near a huge shopping mall!) And sometimes you get to play "cross" when you are near another car with the same frequency.
Both are easy to use, but the FM transmitter is a little work to implement as the default station 87.9 there must be some change anything else. I changed my to 94.7, because many people left here in Cleveland to blame.
The cassette adapter has the advantage that you mount the volume on the iPod, so the volume of the car (you turn the "11", so to speak).
I am very iPod and I have a series of 3 Sainsbury's for about £ 20. It includes a USB cable for iPod charger and FM transmitter. It was a good thing, because they seem rather expensive. I think it was a Belkin TuneCast II It is easy to use, but battery life is quite weak. I checked 3 of 5 The sound quality is very good.
In general, if you have an FM transmitter at low prices on your iPod with a healthy correction, it is quite good. If you worry about the battery life concerns, may not be a couple of batteries.
Hope this helps and good luck finding one, that suits you!
Not very impressed with the FM XMTR (Monster Cable version). Signal interference sometimes the sound quality is average. Cassette adapter sounds better without interference from the radio, the need to keep your iPod into the radio in the neighborhood, hanging from your car.
Both are very well have their advantages and disadvantages.
